There is a saying that marriage is not only about emotions, but its about being partners too in so many way, especially in times of crisis. This may include being business partners as well. During this time when flights were greatly affected this cabin crew couple from Cebu Pacific pulled out the stops to open their flower business.
Meet Ralph and Gel Bediones, both flying for Cebu Pacific. They had been with the airline for a long time but never did they expect such pandemic to happen which has forced the airline to suspend operations. They had to find a way to make ends meet especially that they have a 1-month old son. Instead of allowing the situation to stop them, they found a window of opportunity.
According to Ralph, "the idea came about during the lockdown when we thought access to malls were limited and not a lot of people can go out to gather items. We realized many people got sick during the pandemic and at the same time celebrate their birthdays and special occasions at home so there is a need for flowers to somehow boost peoples morale and liven up their homes as well."
"The pandemic really hit the aviation industry hard and us being Flight Attendants, my wife and I thought of this as a way to support and sustain our needs especially now we have a son who is about to turn 1 this month," shared Ralph.
The couple formed Nature's Way where they sell dried flowers and do floral arrangements. They told us, "our Floral Bouquets, The Lavender and Misty come in different colors and are both household favorites of our clients. A bunch would cost PhP 700 and a customized arrangement is PhP 1,500. However, we understand people are not making a lot of money during this time so we also try our best to work on their budget as well,."
Ralph recognizes also how being a cabin crew has helped the couple in their business, particularly when it comes to customer service. Cebu Pacific, being a low cost airline, does not provide free food, hence they are either pre-ordered online or sold by flight attendants. "I always tell the people I know, being a flight attendant is the best thing to ever happen to me and I'm proud of becoming one. Working for 10 years with the company now, This job has helped me with the basics of being an entrepreneur. We do sell snacks and drinks on board on a daily basis, so offering our business to clients really came in easy for us. Being patient is a trait I'd like to thank my work for because starting a business takes a lot of time, effort and energy," Ralph told us.
So to all our flight attendants who want to be an entrepreneur, do not be afraid. Putting up a business is not easy but you can learn and develop all the skills and habits needed.
You have to be really passionate and knowledgable about what you sell because there will be days when you might not get sales and that's perfectly fine as long as you do not give up. Marketing is king so you really have to utilize social media properly. The pandemic might last awhile so we all have to be proactive and make use of our time effectively while flight operations are still not 100%." -Ralph Bediones
