We deal and communicate with flight attendants everyday, hundreds of them a week. One of the hot topics being discussed now is the COVID-19 issue and how it has affected the aviation industry and one of the topics we have discussed with them is coping and ensuring their health amid fears of the virus spreading.
Well truth be told, they fear retrenchment even more than the COVID-19. Yes the COVID-19 is a scary thing but flight attendants are always reminded by the airlines on how to ensure their health okay and ways to ensure also that they do not get contaminated by the Coronavirus.
First of all, airlines allow flight attendants to wear face masks and they are encouraged to disinfect after every flight. They spray their uniforms with germ-killing sprays. They make sure they take hot showers to further kills the germs after every flight. Flight attendants also bring alcohol and hand-gel to make sure their hands are clean all the time.
A flight attendant of a local airline said "Honestly, its there already. All we can do is to simply take care of ourselves and to ensure we are not couriers. Whats scarier actually is low productivity or even more, getting retrenched," she said.
"We face passengers everyday and some have other contagious sicknesses like cough, colds, or even flu. We make sure we do not become couriers of any germs because we might even affect our own families and loved ones," she continued.
"Flying inspite of COVID-19 is part of our job because we have to fly passengers and ensure their safety. Mas nakakatakot ang mawalan ng trabaho."
Another cabin crew told us, "kasama ito sa trabaho namin, kasi paano na kung kami ang una natatakot sa COVID-19 at may mga pasahero na hindi takot at bumabyahe pa ren. Kelangan kami ng mga pasahero."
He also said, "kelangan lang alagaan sarili namin. Oo nakakatakot ang Coronavirus pero kaya naman namin alagaan sarili namin." The flight steward shared what most cabin crew do to make sure they do not get infected by the virus:
Yes to the cabin crew, the COVID-19 is a scary thing but its something they have to face boldly as part of their job to ensure the safety of the flight and passengers.
"Lahat naman tayo natatakot doon tulad ng takot natin sa mga ibang sakit. Kelangan lang namin alagaan ang sarili," another flight attendant of a local airline said.
"The airline really takes care of us. I even fear losing my job more than flying because of COVID-19. Flight attendant kami. Kaya namin alagaan ang sarili." she ended.
Just for your information, the sentiments of one flight attendant does not represent the general cabin crew group. We in Flyhigh Manila deal with hundreds of flight attendants everyday with a total network of more than 10,000 Filipino cabin crew worldwide and all we can say is what one said is far from what others generally do or think.
Don't worry guys, flight attendants know how to take care of themselves to ensure they do not get infected.
