From a small stall selling plain flowers to becoming one of the pioneers in boxed flowers. From one brand expanding to two, Boxed Blossoms has indeed blossomed throughout the years, now serving also an international market! However, little did many know that behind the success of Boxed Blossoms and House Blossoms are two dedicated and current cabin crew members of Philippines Airlines, the Philippines' national flag carrier.
Jem Tinsay and Gab Espana, also a cabin crew couple, presently fly for PAL while they run Boxed Blossoms and House Blossoms at the same time. They employ a total of 4 employees at its current shop in Las Pinas City.
Boxed Blossoms produces and sells boxed flowers, both fresh and long lasting flowers, usually for occasions, and special 'someones' whereas House Blossoms sells air-dried foliage, grains and flowers for home interior needs. Both Bloxed Blossoms and House Blossoms are luxury floristry brands deeply rooted in sustainability through direct-trade of both fresh flowers and hand-crafted flowers that last for years using local and imported premium materials that create quality and top-notch Filipino floral arrangements.
Being with PAL has helped both these cabin crew grow their business and also individually as entrepreneurs themselves. In her 8-year journey with the airline industry, Jem took advantage of her multifaceted exposure to different countries and cultures, taking notes along the way of available supplies and resources, parlaying all these into being the creative brain behind every product launched.
Gab, meanwhile, mastered his skills in dealing with people. The excellent interpersonal skills he honed throughout his 4-year career in flying with PAL, made him the best candidate to handle the day-to-day operations of the business. He skillfully utilized his cabin crew training in building personal connections essential to client meetings, corporate deals and staff training.
We ourselves are a witness of how PAL hones their cabin crew members not only to be the best flight attendants and stewards, but to also be the best version of themselves in life.
Jem, founder and Chief Executive Officer, started the business in 2015. She was one of the pioneers in the new generation of floral arrangements in the Philippines - signature boxed flowers. While working as an airline cabin crew, she got the idea to bring imported flowers here in the Philippines in 2012 from her layovers abroad. Fascinated by the flowers she saw in different countries, she sought to marry her penchant for classy and timeless pieces by innovatively fusing flowers and luxe craft boxes together, creating the elegant floristry we now know as Boxed Blossoms™️. "Our product line expanded over time and we introduced flowers that last for years back in 2016," she shared.
Jem has always been entrepreneurial. As an 8 year-old, she sold imported candies to her classmates and schoolmates to have savings of her own. As a high schooler, she marketed prepaid internet cards and mobile phone load. Despite having been well provided for by her parents, she was eager to make her own money. She always believed that creating multiple streams of income is a must to succeed financially.
Gab España joined the company in 2019. He brought his innate talent for organizing and handling people and became Chief Operational Officer, overseeing the entire Operations and Logistics of the business. He skillfully blended a man’s perspective into the artistic process which enabled the team to develop products that appeal to both women and men. He also ensures that the team provides customers with an excellent client experience every time. Their partnership is the perfect blend to inspire long standing customer loyalty.
Gab, on the other hand, possesses a natural talent for connecting with people and is very passionate when it comes to organizing and handling groups. His Atenean background is best exemplified in his values and conscientiousness in everything he does. He sees the business as a viable platform to create a long lasting positive impact in this world by helping to create opportunities for others to benefit.
Both Jem and Gab explain that innovation and creativity played a major role in building the branding and business of Boxed Blossoms. "Success cannot be achieved overnight. Building a business and a brand, takes time. We are most fortunate to have established that prior to the pandemic through hard work and perseverance. We learned to innovate and be creative while maintaining our brand principles through the years," Jem shared.
Acccording to Jem, Boxed Blossoms is engaged in the whole creative process of conceptualizing, designing, prototyping and actual flower arrangement. She said, "our floristry believes and supports sustainable partnerships with flower farmers both locally and internationally and the result is a culmination of distinct Filipino artistry. We continuously research techniques to defy withering/wilting, artisan boxes, decorative paper bags and even down to the opulent ribbons to complete our packaging. The materials we use are hand-made and carefully crafted by both international and local artisans to create that unique Boxed Blossoms signature experience."
"Our best seller is our patented Blossoms Musical Dome. It is the first of its kind - made of real flowers that last for years and a rotating musical platform. It is the ultimate timeless piece for your loved one or even for yourself! Cost is a reasonable php6,500 and the glass dome can be personalized with rose gold lettering for an additional charge. We likewise have a wide array of designs that are patented or have a pending patent to offer that distinctive Boxed Blossoms experience," Gab shared.
The coronavirus pandemic proved to be a challenge to the airline industry, also considered as the worst crisis ever in aviation history. This also proved to be a challenge to Gab and Jem as they too face some sort of uncertainty as cabin crew members. However, they decided to focus on pushing forward instead of allowing the crisis to consume their goals.
Gab said, "preparation always pays off. When the CoVid crisis affected the airline industry which we both work in, we were thankful to have invested in assets that sustained the business. We learned to be flexible and collaborated with top-tier luxury brands like Versace.
"Just this May, we introduced our new sister brand House Blossoms, as a venue to provide a wide array of air dried foliage, flowers and grains to cater to the increasing demand for home interior accessories. We have also recently expanded our brand by entering the US market and shipping more products to our partners overseas," he said.
Amidst all that is happening, Gab and Jem continue to see the fruits of their hard work and dedication they placed into Boxed Blossoms and now House Blossoms, which combined, serve a wider market.
"The reality is, it is really difficult to be part of the aviation industry in this time of pandemic. Flights are limited, the demand is low and potential travelers are putting their plans on hold. The best advice that we can give is to never give up. Keep chasing that dream. There may be challenges that will test your faith but always remember that you have not come this far to just quit on your dream. Believe and trust in your inner fortitude to survive. It also helps to surround yourself with people who give you motivation and support," said Jem.
"Starting your business is just like choosing a career: the most important thing is that you see yourself loving and growing from it every day. Keep in mind that you cannot be great at something that you do not love. Be brave and courageous enough to step outside your comfort zone," shared Gab.
Thank you for sharing your #asensocabincrew story Jem and Gab! We hope it inspires all our cabin crew entrepreneurs to grow their small businesses as all these are the country's hope towards the rebirth of the Philippines' economy.
