Life with always throw us curve balls to knock us out, but we have the power to learn where it goes and to get into action in order for it not to knock us. Limuel Hayag Vilela has been a Westjet of Canada flight steward for 5 years already. At the same time, he is also an international model, and an international runway conductor and director. Indeed, he has gone so far in achieving his dreams but behind all the success is a story of determination to win.
Limuel's journey to the skies was not an easy one as he faced a lot of challenges in life. Before moving to Canada, Limuel lived in Pagbilao, Quezon Province. He was six years old when his parents chose to go their own lives leaving him and his three other siblings on their own. They lived in their grandfather's house.
Despite that, life was not easy for them. Limuel and his siblings ate once a day to the point of even knocking on their neighbor's house asking for food.
To make ends meet, Limuel decided to look for relatives to sponsor his education in exchange of working as a houseboy.
Limuel valued education more than anything else. Despite all the challenges of working as a houseboy of different families and being treated differently he still persisted in completing his education. High school was indeed the most challenging for him. He was treated differently, and he was forced to work longer hours before studying. He was made to sleep outside of the house in the middle of a storm to watch over construction materials, to the point where a galvanised iron sheet feel on him while sleeping, causing a huge wound.
Whenever he would see airplanes fly high above him, he would merely think that being up there is too high to reach as of the moment, so all he wanted was to work his way out of the present situation.
Due to Limuel's persistence and effort to remain focused on his education, he finally graduated from the Southern Luzon State University, Magna Cum Laude! His auntie who was also his mother figure and the one responsible of helping Limuel earn a college degree, went up to get the diploma.
Limuel's big break came in when he began working in KFC in the Philippines. His hard work allowed Limuel to work as a management trainee, eventually sending him off to work for branches in the United Kingdom and in Canada.
While working as a general manager in KFC in Canada, he saw a job opening at Westjet for cabin crew. Recalling his dream of one day flying up there, Limuel gave it a try. During the impact interview, Limuel was asked, "What can you bring to this company?" He answered, "a bucket of KFC. Knowledge, Faith, and Confidence. I am going to get this job today.”
Limuel eventually got the job as a flight steward of Westjet Canada! What he used to see as something too high is now his second home.
Aside from being a flight steward and an international fashion model, Limuel pushed his ambitions further. He is also one of the founders of Spotlight Courrone Internationale Inc. Personality Development and Training Camp , producer of Calgary International Fashion and Arts Week.
Indeed, Limuel has two runways, the aviation and fashion industries.
As a Westjet flight steward for 5 years already, Limuel has learned to spread and maximize his wings so we can fly higher and discover more of ourselves and our potentials.
His advice to all our future cabin crew is this:
"Don’t just follow the direction you see, create your own path so you can leave your own destination to share and inspire others. Always remember if you want to fly , leave all the extra luggages ( like negativities, jealousy, bad attitude, etc ) in your life so you can soar high."
"My pillars of strength are my family especially my siblings, my challenges/ lessons in life, the people who supported and trusted me , the people who inspired me or people that I inspired and most of all our Lord who made me who I am today," Limuel said.
To end, Limuel says, "to our future cabin crew, be one of the angel of skies, we are waiting to you."
