In a little over a day, the most wonderful time of the year shall come. Today, I had a quick chat with a friend flying to Honolulu. I said “Boarding na haha Merry Christmas!” His reply was “haha Nang inggit ang nasa lupa (land)! Merry Christmas, Mayie! Enjoy the holidays!” Sent him back a message “Ay mejjjjj namimiss ko na nga sa ulap (cloud) haha May mga VIPs ka pa on-board haha You, too, have fun. Happy Holidays!”
This made me smile, as it brought me back to the times I celebrated most of the special occasions away from home, including arriving in Manila the 26th of December for vacation, and flying back to my base in the Middle East the 31st of December. That’s right! Home day after Christmas until day before the New Year. Now, considering this fact, I missed it a bit.... Flying, and everything that comes with it. Funny how we cannot appreciate sometimes what we have and wish we would rather be somewhere else and perhaps, doing a different job. Then, when we’re out of it and already in the “I’d rather-be-in-place,” we miss what we have left. I am guilty!
I am Anne “Mayie” Carballo. I am a former International Flight Attendant. Because of my job, I have spent three consecutive Christmases away from my family. Loud and proud. And so, I salute all the Flight Attendants and Pilots who willingly and gladly fly their passengers safely and comfortably to their destinations, especially, during this holiday season, as well as the Ground Crew, be it by the Check-In Counters, Security, etc., who have important roles in making every safe and successful flight possible. May the Lord continue to bless all the aircrafts flying to and from across the globe, and all the ATCs and airports around the world. May the passengers enjoy and have happy trips, as they travel and relax for vacation from their jobs, and celebrate with their families and friends. As Christmas is almost here, may we, regardless of what, who, where we are, appreciate what we have. We may not always get the best of both worlds, a beautiful job and all the holiday breaks, however, there is always beauty in everything. We may be away from home on some or most special events and missing the parties here and there, while serving and delighting our passengers, well, that is beauty in the Airline Industry. Certainly, the passengers and everyone on-board’s safety, comfort and happiness are our priorities.
Happy Christmas! A Merry 2019! Let us also call to mind the true essence of the occasion.
