Just recently, a Delta flight attendant named KaeLeigh Marie-Cecilia wrote a long message to all cabin crew particularly those facing depression, and other emotional challenges. As you see, crewlife is not all glamorous as many thinks. Behind all those Instagram and Facebook photos of flight attendants is something we do not know, and that is their true emotions as of that moment.
Just a few days ago, a follower of Flyhigh Manila who is also a cabin crew of Delta, messaged us that two of his colleagues committed suicide. Yes, that's two flight attendants, who most probably are facing depression.
Depression is indeed a serious matter, even in the airline industry. Travelling, seeing places, meeting countless people, and working in a job which is one of the world's most coveted doesn't spare you from facing depression. Erratic work schedules, separation anxiety from loved ones, and loneliness, especially during the cold season, are a few causes.
Here is Delta flight attendant KaeLeigh Marie-Cecilia's message:
I need to talk about something that I don’t want to talk about. But I need to.
If you follow my social media or watch my Instagram stories, you probably know that I often talk about my job. I regularly get a lot of feedback about how exciting, fun, & adventurous life appears. It can easily seem glamorous to be jetsetting the world.. and sure, sometimes those moments CAN be fun (don’t get me wrong) & they often seem surreal. But please... PLEASE remember that those moments are the highlight reels of my life. Those are my most “instagrammable”, likable, shareable moments. And there is plenty that stays behind the scenes. I don’t often share the anxiety attacks with you. The emotional breakdowns. The exhausting frustrations where I feel beat to hell & overwhelmed with stress.
With all of the recent “come fly with me” talk (it’s that hiring time of year) there’s been a lot more of you reaching out with questions inquiring about my job. You want to know the (literal) highs & lows & everything in between that comes with this lifestyle,.. & I want you to know the truth.
This reality is hard. Really, REALLY freakin hard. It is stressful beyond an explanation that you can’t understand outside of this industry. It is lonely. It is exhausting. It is both a physical & an emotional beating. The unique way we handle the public whittles down our personal character in an unfamiliar way. Our personal relationships suffer tremendously. We sacrifice A LOT, & tend to question what we may be getting in return. We spend a huge amount of our time driving, flying, walking, & sitting within our “work” timeframes ... off the clock. And spend EVERY single holiday away from our loved ones, & sometimes alone.
Above all else, our emotional & mental well-being can often take a huge beating. & though it seems that some may forget at times, we ARE human. And we struggle. We are a unique family intertwined with shiny wings & endless jumpseat therapy sessions.
We often quickly go from one extreme to the next - being indispensable to hundreds, followed by intense amounts of isolation... But you don’t get to see these reels of our life because these are not the moments that make our feeds pretty or tend to get the most followers.
This lifestyle requires an insane amount of support, encouragement, & love... & it often includes days that make it extra difficult to find those moments on our own. I am blessed beyond reason with an amazing support system at home,.. but I am also blessed by an amazing crew of coworkers who share their wings when mine feel clipped.
Recently, MANY (far too many) of my adventurous, beautiful, vibrant coworkers have made the drastic & devastating decisions to end their own lives.
To my flight family - we may be lonely, but we are NOT alone. You are special. You are heard. You are understood. You are loved. You are needed. We struggle together, & we soar together. YOU are not alone. No matter what logo you wear on your wings, or what brand of metal you fly,.. I want you to know that I will sit with you on the jumpseat & listen to your stories. I want you to know that I will laugh with you, I will cry with you, & I will fly with you always.
I am here. We are all here. & we will love you through your lowlight reels of life.
