Despite that many airlines accept individuals with at least 2 years in college to be cabin crew, there are plenty of highly educated flight attendants out there who have more than just graduated from college. They are degree holders and some are even national board passers like RNs or registered nurses! Some of them are even studying to take a Masters degree like an MBA while flying! Despite their educational attainment, why did they become cabin crew and not apply as a manager or Vice-President in a huge corporation?
Passenger safety is top priority inside an aircraft, and flight attendants are instructed by the airlines and international safety standard boards to carry out procedures to ensure the safety and security of passengers, whether we like it or not. Sad to say, some passengers do not see it this way. Some even scold flight attendants for carrying out these safety procedures and instructions, as though it is against their will to follow them.
Why Flight Attendants Check Your Boarding Pass And Why You Have No Right to Get Mad at Them for Doing So
Okay, so another issue was raised, and this is the issue of some passengers scolding flight attendants for merely asking them to present their boarding pass for checking. What??? Yes, some passengers would scold flight attendants when they are asked to present their boarding pass for checking. What again??? We actually wonder why they get mad when it is an airline standard procedure for valid reasons.
A typical airline passenger would see a flight attendant greet them, check if seatbelts are fastened, window shades are up, tray tables are stowed, seats are in upright position, serve meals, attend to other passenger needs, make landing checks, and carry out landing safety procedures. For some people alone, seeing this scene alone makes them claim that flight attendants are "just waiters in the sky". This is 100% absolutely wrong to be straightforward about it.
It is indeed one of the most coveted jobs in the world. During open days, thousands of aspiring cabin crew lines up regardless of the weather conditions in a quest to realize their dreams to be a flight attendant one day. This goes the same for Delta in the USA! Just recently, they announced that they will be hiring a thousand cabin crew this 2019 and many are surely excited for this.
Last August 1, news broke out that an Aeromexico Connect Embraer E-190 jet taking off from Durango heading to Mexico City, crashed during take-off. Luckily, all 99 passengers and 4 crew members survived the crash. The aircraft went up in flames and all passengers were evacuated immediately within less than 2 minutes! Yes, that's 99 passengers out a burning aircraft in less than 2 minutes!
Proof that Flight Attendants Are Not Obligated to Lift Passenger Luggage Unto the Overhead Stowage Bins Part II
First and foremost, it is not part of the duty of cabin crew members to lift passenger luggage unto the overhead compartments. They may however lend assistance to passengers with physical hindrances like PWDs, pregnant women, elderlies, or anyone with any physical hindrance in stowing their carry-on bags unto the overhead compartments. Some may still not be aware of this so to back up our statements, we decided to directly ask airlines if their cabin crew members are obligated to lift passenger carry-ons into the OSBs. Many people still tends to make judgement based on what they only see with their naked eyes. Since they most of the time only see flight attendants serving food, welcoming passengers, doing safety demos, and attending to passenger needs on board, they get this quick conceived notion that cabin crew members are "flying waiters/waitresses" and "glorified maids". The only time the same passengers would realize the real worth of a flight attendant, sadly, are during accidents and an emergency situation, basically, situations where human lives are at risk.
When most thinks that the main job of the cabin crew is to serve "chicken or beef", it is absolutely not. We do understand that some people base this notion on what they see when they fly in an aircraft, especially that flight attendants do serve meals to passengers for them to enjoy a great and comfortable flying experience. They also attend to your needs right away because again, they want you to be comfortable, especially that you are actually flying at 40,000ft above the ground.
When some people think that the job of a flight attendant is just about serving chichen beef and that it's a "no-brainer" job, we think that there are 50 reasons why "no-brainers" will never make it to be a cabin crew. And to those who looks down on flight attendants because you think they are merely "glorified flying servants", do not forget that every government official you look up to including the Senators, Congressmen, Cabinet Secretaries, Vice-President, and even our President are known as public servants!
A recent study by the Harvard Flight Attendant Health Survey shows that flight attendants are at greater risks of getting many types of cancers than majority of the population. Based on the research which followed more than 5,000 cabin crew, they found that their risk of getting breast cancer increased by 50% while the risks of stomach cancers are raised by as much as 74 percent!
If only flight attendants are allowed to tell you things you need to know, they would but unfortunately, they are not allowed to do that especially when on board the aircraft. They actually do quite have a list and they are happy that we are willing to say it for them.. So here are things flight attendants wish you would know about them and their jobs. I am a flight attendant … and boy can it cause some chaos at home!
Almost nine months ago, I made a drastic change in careers. I went from working a 9-5pm, or should I say, a 9-9pm social worker job, to becoming a cabin crew. There’s a whole story behind why I did so – but let’s stick to the facts of what’s been happening since then.
Say whatever you want about their jobs but no matter how much you try to degrade them or to make them think that there's more to being a flight attendant, you are actually just trying to burn bridges. One reason why cabin crew members are very much united regardless of what airline they are in is because they are very proud of themselves for being one.
When you become a cabin crew, you do not just work as an individual, you work as a team, a team of other cabin crew members and your flight deck crew. Hence, if you dream of being a flight attendant, you have to be a team player. Erik Portus, a Philippine Airlines cabin crew trainor says "team work is very important. Without it, everything is affected. Service delivery will be all over the place."

Everyday, my uniform gets heavier and heavier, and that's because everyday, it absorbs new experiences, new adventures, new personalities, and even new situations. Regardless of what kind of situations they are, I treasure each and every one of them. My fun layovers, those irrate passengers, and even during those times when we had to make emergency landings, all contributed to what I call, the joys of flying. Hey, nobody like emergency situations anyway but that's what we were trained for.
We have seen many posts about what's in a cabin crew's bag. Well. how about if we take a peak on what may be in a Filipino cabin crew's luggage whenever they travel. We asked some cabin crew members what are some of the usual items they bring during flights particularly long haul ones and they gladly enumerated the most common stuff they can't leave home without.

These basic rights of the cabin crew were placed there for them to be able to carry out their duties without hindrance in ensuring the security and safety of all passengers. According to various treaties and conventions, flight attendants and stewards have 5 basic rights.
Stress has been the biggest enemy of flight attendants and stewards. This is caused mostly by different sleeping patters brought by flying different in time zones and and working at different hours everyday, dealing with some passengers who may get too demanding out of the norm, and other factors. Stress is what usually causes them to fall ill, hence, cabin crew members have different ways of managing things in order for them to be in top shape at all times.
The cabin crew are at the forefront of the safety and security of passengers aboard an aircraft. They go through months of grueling training to equip them for any emergency situation inside an aircraft. There are some cases though that are rare, and sometimes, these are situations that they least expect to happen but they have to be dealt with by the cabin crew.
We can't expect everything to be perfect especially when you start flying, even if you were the number one or valedictorian during your cabin crew training. There will be some mistakes, and there are also some booboos that you may commit. There are also those embarrassing moments too that you would just want to laugh about amd we name some of those moments many cabin crew members go through.
